EM moonlighting: The focus should be on patient safety

      The consensus document published in this issue formulated by AAEM, CORD, and SAEM is in response to certain issues raised by a 1998 position paper put forth by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB). The recommendations in the FSMB position paper are now being considered for adoption by individual State Medical Boards. The issue that has sparked the most controversy in Emergency Medicine (EM) is the proposal’s effective elimination of “moonlighting” by residents in Emergency Medicine through requiring 3 years of accredited postgraduate training before full independent licensure. The FSMB’s intent to raise the minimum training standard for the independent practice of any physician practice is clear.
