An Unusual Case of Lemierre's Syndrome Due to Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus

Published:September 17, 2008DOI:https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jemermed.2007.12.036
We report a rare case of Lemierre's syndrome in a young woman. The syndrome classically occurs when an occult oropharyngeal infection spreads locally, causing jugular vein septic thrombophlebitis. Showers of septic emboli to the lungs and body rapidly results in overwhelming sepsis in an otherwise healthy young patient. Although typically caused by normal anaerobic flora, in our case, the causative agent was methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
