Computed Tomography (CT) imaging has increased substantially in the last two decades
and has been identified as a significant driver of health care cots and increasing
ionizing medical radiation exposure. Of CT imaging, Pulmonary CT angiography for suspected
pulmonary embolism (PE) is of particular interest as preliminary studies suggest there
is wide geographic variation in the utilization of CT for PE and that many of these
tests are likely inappropriately ordered. While diagnostic yield studies have been
performed for cardiac and abdominal CT imaging, little work has been done to describe
the diagnostic yield of CT imaging for suspected PE in the emergency department (ED).
