      In an era when opioid abuse has become a national epidemic and its toll on the health care system is taxing, this important study looks to validate one of the most important tools for identifying and intervening with patients with alcohol or substance use disorders (SUD) in the emergency medicine (EM) provider's arsenal. Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence- based tool that employs a validated screening procedure to identify and classify at risk patients; but does it reduce health care costs and system utilization?
