For patients admitted to the hospital for asthma exacerbation, current guidelines
do not recommend treating with antibiotics; however previous studies have shown a
high rate of patients being prescribed antibiotics. It is unclear how treatment with
antibiotics affects outcomes for hospitalized patients treated for asthma exacerbation.
The purpose of this study was to determine if there is any added benefit in early
antibiotic treatment in addition to systemic steroids for patients hospitalized with
asthma exacerbation.
